The typical enterprise consulting engagement follows a predictable arc: a 6-week scoping phase that produces a statement of work, a 3-month discovery phase that produces a research report, a 6-week synthesis phase that produces recommendations, and then — if the project survives budget cycles and executive turnover — an implementation phase that no one from the original team is still around to own. What Happens in 100 Days

The sprint is divided into four phases, each with a defined output. The output of each phase gates the next — there is no moving to design without a completed problem definition, no delivery without validated design concepts.

Days 1–20
Discover
Research phase. Customer interviews, competitive analysis, data review, and stakeholder alignment sessions. The goal is not to confirm existing hypotheses — it is to identify what the organization does not yet know. Teams that skip this phase in the interest of speed deliver solutions to the wrong problem.
Output: A research synthesis and insight brief that frames the problem in customer language, not internal language.
Days 21–35
Define
Problem framing. Using the Stacey Matrix to distinguish complex, complicated, and obvious problems — because the right solution type depends on correctly diagnosing the problem type. A complex problem requires experimentation and co-creation. A complicated problem requires structured execution design. Misidentifying the type produces a mismatched intervention.
Output: A problem statement, design criteria, and a sprint brief that both client and Redesign team sign off on before design begins.
Days 36–75
Design
Co-creation phase. Workshops, prototyping, testing, iteration. For CX engagements: journey maps, NPS program architecture, operational playbooks. For product: wireframes, prototypes, usability testing. For business design: GTM models, service blueprints, sales playbooks. Concepts are tested with real users or stakeholders before being finalized — not presented as recommendations.
Output: Validated design concepts and a prioritized implementation plan with clear ownership and sequencing.
Days 76–100
Deliver
Implementation and handover. Production-quality output — code, program documentation, operational runbooks — that client teams can own and run after the sprint ends. The handover is designed as part of the engagement, not treated as an afterthought. The goal is zero dependency on Redesign for day-to-day execution after day 100.
Output: Live impact and a 90-day roadmap for continued execution that the client team can operate independently.

How Sprint-Based Consulting Changes the Commercial Relationship

The most important change is accountability. In an open-ended retainer, the consultant's incentive is to stay engaged — to find new problems, extend the mandate, add workstreams. The business model rewards continuity, not completion. In a sprint, the incentive structure is reversed: deliver the scoped output in the defined window, then step back. A sprint ends. A retainer does not. That structural difference changes how consultants prioritize, how they communicate progress, and how they make tradeoff decisions under time pressure.

It also changes the client's behavior. When the engagement has a defined end date and a defined deliverable, the client is more likely to show up for research sessions, review prototypes quickly, make decisions when asked, and hold the consultant accountable for delivery.
